Concealed Carry - Where do you NOT carry your firearm?

Postby han » Sun Jul 29, 2012 9:05 am

Question specifically for people who carry a concealed weapon somewhat regularly: When & where do you NOT carry your gun? Why not?

I don't own a handgun, but I've been wanting to get one (or more) for concealed carry for a while. I'm already reading up on my state's laws, so I know I need a CPL and I know things like you can't take it onto school property or into a bar. Just wondering if there are any other places you don't bother to carry even though you could.

I carry everywhere except where state law says I can't. If a store, restaurant or other place of business has a no guns sign up, I usually take my business and my money to another establishment that respects this countries 2nd amendment right, and my personal right to self protection and self sufficiency.

The recent in shooting in Colorado should open the entire countries eyes to the fact that these stupid no guns allowed signs only make it easier for criminals to operate with impunity and disarm the victims who might otherwise be able to defend themselves. A criminal by their very nature disregards the law and rules, the only people who obeyed the rules in this instance were the victims of the shooter. All it would have taken was one or more legally armed people in that theater to put a stop to the shooters rampage. Instead, the theaters policy of disarming their patrons is partially responsible for the victim count. You won't see the liberal media report on this though, instead they want to blame the gun for the shooting, not the shooter or the theaters policy.

Caine Toad is correct.
IF you plan to carry, you do so ALL the time; AND you become proficient in the use of your weapon.
It does you NO good IF you are NOT carrying it; OR are NOT proficient in it's use.

Concealed Carry - Where do you NOT carry your firearm?

I carry mine everywhere but at my place of employment, as it's a mandatory firing offense to have one there. Otherwise, mine's by my side.

US post office, most banks ( mine has metal detector security doors at every branch), Courthouses & most Government buildings. Your job. Most work places have no gun / drug policies. Carry at your own risk of job. Schools. Airports. Bars & clubs? Depends on state. Typically thatis where things start.

Biggest NO NO? Crossing state borders. While many states honor your permit, they tend never to be next door. Here in PA I think only W Va. honors ours. Cross into NY, MD, NJ And your in trouble. God forbid you trying to cross into Mexico or Canada.....

I'll add to the group that carries everywhere I legally can carry, with the exception of my place of work.

I don't carry at work since there is an administrative policy prohibiting firearms (I work on a military installation), and I don't feel like potentially losing my job. Contrary to popular internet rumor, there is no Federal statute that prohibits concealed carry by permit holders.
"18 USC 930 (d) Subsection (a) shall not apply to— ...
(3) the lawful carrying of firearms or other dangerous weapons in a Federal facility incident to hunting or other lawful purposes."

Here in Texas, with a CHL, concealed carry is an "other lawful purpose" and therefore not considered unlawful under Federal statute. This was confirmed several years ago by my organization's general counsel and by the local Federal prosecutor. So, neither Texas nor Federal law prohibits carry on a military installation (or other Federal property, with the exception of courthouses), but a Post Regulation (administrative, not statutory) prohibits it. Since folks can be fired for breaking adminstrative rules, I choose not to be the test case.

I do carry in church since Texas law was amended to allow this.

I don't carry in the secure are of an airport, but do carry in the lobby areas when dropping someone off or picking them up, since that is legal.

I don't go to bars, which have to display a "51% sign" by Texas law that warns patrons that 51% of the business revenue comes from alcohol sales and carry is illegal there.

I haven't recently seen a Texas "30.06 sign" that allows private businesses to opt out and prevent concealed carry on their premises. There were some that went up right after concealed carry started here (shortly after the Killeen Luby's massacre), but I haven't seen one in over 7 years. The little gun with a red circle and slash can be (and is) ignored. It has no traction is Texas law. Interestingly, one branch of my bank has such a sign and the other three that I've visited don't. The one that has it also has a police sub-station in it. Either way, it can be ignored since signs must comply with the 30.06 sign or be one of the statutory places where carry is illegal (schools, sporting events, courthouse, correctional facility, polling places). The only one of these I visit regularly is polling places.

Concealed Carry - Where do you NOT carry your firearm?

I carry it everywhere I go when I am out of the house... If a business has a "No Guns Allowed" sign, I simply don't do business there... I even carry in church...but then so does my pastor, who is a hunter and he also has a concealed carry license.
