Gauze left inside girlfriend's vagina after natural childbirth. Malpractice?

My girlfriend has been experiencing pelvic pains the last couple of days as well as a foul odor coming from her vagina. Her aunt was telling a story about how back in the early 90s her doctor left gauze in her vagina accidentally. I have done a little reading and it seems you can get toxic shock from leaving a tampon, or in this case gauze, in the vagina for more than a couple days. Is this something you can sue a doctor for?

yes you can but you need to be sure there is a gauze there. just bc you heard a story back in the 90s doesnt mean she has one up there.
