Is it safe to give out my bank account statement to a property management company?

so here is the story: i'm renting an apartment and the property dealer asked me to give him my credit card info and my Social Security number, I declined that, then he asked me to send him my bank statement so he can make sure i'm financially stable. the question is if i am to pay one month deposit for the apartment, why my bank statement is required?
I rented my last apartment in LA and they never asked for those, they just asked for an ID and a one month deposit and that was it!! are property laws different in different states? this property dealer is in Providence, Rhode Island.

He should be able to get the information he needs to know your financial history by simply getting your credit history from any one or all three of the credit reporting companies. They have all needed information. You may still need to give them your SSN in order to prove who you are. The bank statement isn't that risky for you to divulge unless you feel the credit reports should be enough. I had to do the similar things to get refinanced a few months ago.
