How have your interests and related experiences influenced your selection of major?
Any critic would be welcomed. Please give me your opinions and what you think. Thanks
As I stood waist deep in the luke warm ocean water, I was fascinated by how the color in the water changes with the light and color of the sky from blue to green to gray. Looking at my surroundings I came to realize I have never seen so much natural beauty. A natural beauty that man has barely touched or seen. That summer I spend my vacation in the rural out skirts of Baja California. My family and I camped out for a month on a rustic stretched of shoreline far from any form of civilization. At first I opposed the idea of camping out in the wilderness, especially being without any technological devices. But as the days passed I slowly began to take in the rare beauty I hardly ever get too see in the city. I became captivated by the wonders of nature and how pure all of my surroundings were.
Returning back home to the busy and heavily polluted city of L.A was a complete shock. Everyday I lone to go back to nature’s simplicity and beauty. An indescribable love and passion for the environment started to grow inside of me. I found myself eager to learn more about how the environment works and functions. In my freshman year of high school I decided to take a course in Physical and Environmental science. Immediately I became intrigued with this field of science. Whether it was building a greenhouse or researching about the different plant species that grew on my high school campus I just loved being a part of it all. Going into my senior year of high school I found my yearn for knowledge about the natural environment unsatisfied. Hence that summer I decided to take Biogeography at UCLA. Taking this course was very rewarding and beneficial not only because I was able to excel in the class with an A but also because it made me realize I wanted to pursue environmental studies as a major.
After having a better understanding of how humans impact the environment, I decided to take action. I started a recycle program at my school were I collected cans and took them to the recycle center. I also became involved in beach clean ups and tree planting in my community. Natural and Environmental studies is a major I wish to pursue at Cornell not only because I know I will be fulfilling my dreams but also because this major is necessary for the future. With this major I know I will be able to help solve many of the environmental issues the world faces today, and be to help preserve the beauty of nature for future generations.
