I doubt that person who is simply curious would be likely to consider himself a Christian.   hipnek 19 months ago

"By their works you shall know them"...that includes not looking down one's nose at the outsiders who come in. Remember where we all came from.   MNsawyer 19 months ago

What Do You Consider To Be A Definition Of A Christian?

>That is a story in the Bible.Yep, I know. I'm the one who brought it up, remember? >I don't think Jesus was ever disrespectful of the Old Testament. I don't either. I assume you are implying that I have been. Sorry, if it seems so; that wasn't my intent. I love the Bible, especially the King James Version.>No, he wasn't known for telling offensive stories. Wow. That is one pitiful statement. Have you ever actually read the Gospels? Just about all Jesus did was walk around the countryside telling provocative stories.>Turning over the tables was an entirely different thing.Who said anything about him having turned over the tables? I said he turned the conventional religious thinking on its end. PLEASE PAY ATTENTION!>No, I would not call the way you told the Old Testament story provocative. I would call it offensive. It was showing disrespect to the Bible, to Christians, and to Jews. Oops! Sowwy "the Bible, to Christians, and... Jews"! No offense intended!>I noticed that you told Yellow Dog that you now consider yourself a ChristianNo, you didn't notice that. You just made that up. My beliefs have been stable for many years now and I stopped referring to myself as a Christian long ago. But, since your lying ass has just claimed to have noticed my having said otherwise, would you please supply a link?   hipnek 19 months ago

What Do You Consider To Be A Definition Of A Christian?

Postby Elidor » Wed Feb 05, 2014 6:03 am

Everytime I witness the actions of a professed Christian, the word is newly defined for me. When the actions are positive, I see Christianity as positive. When the actions are negative, I see Christianity as negative. That is because Christians use their faith to defend their every action. Therefore, if it is to disrespect the belief of another, they will use their faith to defend that judgment. If it is to give to the poor, they will use their faith to defend it. Good or bad, all things all Christians do are defended by their religion.Theoretically, a Christian is a follow of Christ. Where the confusion comes in, is that you read the words of Christ in the Bible, and quite often, the actions of Christians do not adhere to those words. This is confusing to non Christians. The result seems to be a form of justification for deviating from the words of Jesus Christ. This to me dilutes the truths supposedly embraced by Christians. So a Christian to me is whatever they are defending at the moment. Some moments it is judgment and persecution they are defending. This is confusing.Other moments it is love and compassion. That is wonderful. So one wonders, which kind of Christian will I meet today? Will it be the one who actually believes in Christianity? For example: Romney, a very wealthy man who is against assisting the poor, waves them off like so much prattle, who has never been poor a day in his life, and is one of the richest men in the country at the hand of the hardship of others. How do these passages express HIS Christianity?: "A good man sheweth favour, and lendeth: he will guide his affairs with discretion. Surely he shall not be moved for ever: the righteous shall be in everlasting remembrance. He hath dispersed, he hath given to the poor; his righteousness endureth for ever; his horn shall be exalted with honour.(Psalm 112:5,6,9)For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?(Matthew 16:26)"How does Romney justify his callousness and love of wealth over principle and his love of power over integrity? Does he lie in the face of Bible Scripture? Does he re-interpret the bible to suit his needs, much as Bush reinterpreted the Constitution to legalize torture? A Christian who actually follows the words of their Christ is a pleasure to know. But where ARE they? How can anyone know what a real Christian IS, when there are so many VERSIONS of it?   Skylight 19 months ago

So, how do you define the word Christian? I'll go out on a limb and say I'll bet the "basics" are a belief in the incarnation, resurrection, and atonement, right?   hipnek 19 months ago

Here we go again! I am not trolling. I gave a true answer. According to the Bible, we are all sinners and all have to come as outsiders. But, I guess some have been in the church forever and never had to go through that. Just lighten up, will you!?   MNsawyer 19 months ago

Someone who embodies all the teachings alleged to have come from Christ. Not just the ones they think are appropriate. And nothing that Christianity was know for from 300 AD - 1960 AD. And certainly very very of the people who call themselves that now.   Schelli 19 months ago

I have not dressed up for 26 years maybe...I have clothes...but wear T shirt and baggy slacks usually. If I dress up it causes problems...I can't go to 4 churches due to guys chasing me.   Shasha 19 months ago
