Should my mother in law use my bathroom withou asking?

Postby siwili » Wed Jun 27, 2012 1:36 am

I rented a beachouse for my husband and our families. I decided that since I did all the leg work that I (husband and infant) will take the master BR with bath. So I go upstairs to my room yesterday to take a shower and my MIL is in my bathroom talking on the phone. Meanwhile her bathroom in the hallway is EMPTY. So My husband and I tell her that if she's going to use our Bedroom and BR that I would appreciate a heads up from her first. Well she didn't like that and told me that "she doesn't have the luxury of her own bathroom". (Mind you- she camps out- she was in there for over and 1.5 hour) Am I crazy or is it okay to tell her that I would appreciate just an acknowledgment that you will be using my shower and my room? It's only the third day of vacation!

I my opinion, she should not even ask and assume that she can use it. Since there is another bath available that does not intrude on your bedroom space, she should use that bath and stay the hell out of yours. I would tell her that.

Why don't you leave things alone now that you've told her.

I guess it boils down to whats more important...your own bathroom or having a pleasant vacation? I'm a little selfish on that front so I would probably fight over the stupid bathroom.

She obviously doesn't understand personal space. Ask her if she needs more room or if the space you have graciously given her is working out ok for her. If she says no, tell her to get her own beach house! If it was a very sensitive and important phone call, she may have just needed more privacy, but use past judgement to decide on that. If you see her in there again ask her if there is something wrong with her room. Good Luck!

There's something weird going on. She's snooping, or upset about something. If it were me, I'd tell her "I'm afraid we feel this is a violation of our privacy. We're not asking, we're insisting."

My dear friend, sometimes it pays to be blunt. Be blunt and tell her what you expect from her or suffer in silence.Choice is yours.
